Chapter Summary

As the second largest economy in the world, China has a commitment to a remarkably more open and liberal investment regime that will not only impact its own economy, but also influence world investment flows and corresponding legal developments. It is therefore important, more than ever, to debate the course of future development of the international investment regime and focus on its rapidly intensified interaction with China. The 20th anniversary of China's accession to the ICSID provided a perfect opportunity for such a debate. The "China and ICSID" International Workshop and Roundtable on International Investment Law and Arbitration was therefore organized in 2012 at Xi'an, the eastern starting point of the ancient Silk Road, by Xi'an Jiaotong University School of Law and its Silk Road Institute for International and Comparative Law (SRIICL).
