Chapter Summary

Some recently published or newly discovered documents shed some light on fiscal matters in the monastery of Bawit during the Early Islamic period. The evidence about land taxes is rare, but many texts inform us about the personal taxes the monks had to pay, as well as about the brothers of the andrismos, who were in charge of collecting such taxes within the monastery. Finally, a Leuven papyrus gives us the opportunity to estimate the considerable amount of land and personal taxes the monastery paid each year. This chapter discusses the above concepts in French language.
