Chapter Summary

In this chapter, the author presents, in broad outline, the main stages of the history of Montpellier, from its origins to the dawn of 16th century. The seigneurial dynasty of Guilhem has often been described as the source of the foundation: we see them appearing in archives at the end of the 10th century, following a castral movement whose origins are difficult to identify. The city owed its prosperity of closeness of the harbour in Lattes that allowed the largest trade of Montpellier to carve an enviable position on the coast. Montpellier had sworn loyalty to an impressive charter of 122 franchises known as the "Statutes of 1204", although the wording will be staggered until 1217. These statutes were a real essential charter of the city which granted a number of freedoms to Montpellier. The original text of the chapter is in French.
