Chapter Summary

This introductory chapter covers the key concepts discussed in the book Synopsis of a Purer Theology: Latin Text and English Translation: Volume 1, Disputations 1-23. Reformed scholastic theology arises from an ecclesiastical background in the Reformed churches that were established in the Netherlands in the middle of the sixteenth century. The twenty-three disputations of the Synopsis are divided into five clusters that show the basic lines of scholastic Reformed theology: Holy Scripture as the foundation of theology, the Triune God, the creation of the world, humanity as creatures fallen into sin, God's address to humanity in Law and Gospel. As the diction of the Synopsis ranges widely from classical and biblical antiquity to contemporary times, the authors have consulted the standard classical, medieval, and neo-Latin dictionaries and lexicons. The religious, cultural, and socio-political contexts in which the Synopsis originated are reflected in numerous references and allusions.
