Chapter Summary

This index of the book A Companion to John of Salisbury presents a list of proper nouns, terms and concepts relevant to the discussion on John of Salisbury and the writing of history. In the Historia pontificalis, unlike many of his contemporaries, John of Salisbury was not interested in recounting supernatural signs and wonders that bore God's presence in the world. In this work, he repeatedly described conflict between important men (and very occasionally women) over issues of primacy, whether it was primacy of orthodoxy, in land-holding, or in ecclesiastical status.

Keywords: God; Historia pontificalis.; John of Salisbury
