Chapter Summary

This first edition of Yefet ben Eli's commentary on Joshua is based on the collation of two nearly complete manuscripts, seven substantial fragments, eight short fragments, and two collections of fragments in Arabic characters. In total these nineteen sources give witness to seventeen different manuscripts: a very significant amount of material. This edition of Yefet b. Eli's commentary on Joshua is based on the collation of all manuscript witnesses excluding the three-folio Arabic character fragment MS K and the short fragment MS R. In general the author follows the Arabized tradition using MS L as the base, though he emends in light of the other manuscripts in the same tradition, especially the early Arabic-character fragments in MS TET. In accordance with the editorial procedure of "Karaite Texts and Studies", the present edition of Yefet b. Eli's commentary on Joshua includes two apparatuses.

Keywords: early Arabic-character fragments; Joshua; manuscript; Yefet ben Eli
