Chapter Summary

British Library Or. 2547 preserves six separate continuous fragments from the commentary on Joshua in Arabic characters from the early eleventh century. This is by far the earliest witness of Yefet ben 'Eli's work. All of the variants have been recorded in the apparatus, but because of the special significance of these fragments, early date and in Arabic characters, the complete text is given in the appendix, in two versions. The first version is in Arabic only, almost exactly as it appears in the manuscript; the only difference is that the author does not include the Hebrew vocalization of the Arabic transcription of Hebrew verses and he adds occasional dots. The second version gives the same text with the Hebrew verses and words added in Hebrew characters to help readers see how the Hebrew has been transcribed into Arabic characters.
