Chapter Summary

This chapter presents maps of Europe and Northern Africa, the Near East, South East and East Asia that occur in the book Salamanders of the Old World: The Salamanders of Europe, Asia and Northern Africa. The book talks about Salamanders of the family Proteidae that are permanently aquatic and retain the large, filamentous gills and caudal fins characteristic of larvae throughout life. The family Proteidae contains two genera, the European genus Proteus and Necturus. Necturus is an eastern North American genus with normal pigmentation, functioning eyes and four digits on each foot.
