Chapter Summary

This chapter presents an overview on Aristotelian radical hylemorphism, representationalism and empiricism. It discusses the momentous relationship that connects the Aristotelian epistemology and ontology. This relationship lies in the central thesis of the Peripatetic theory of cognition. In Aristotelian hylomorphism form and matter are primarily seen as constitutive elements of the entities. It is shown that intellect must have an intangible status comparable to that of immaterial substances that hold the heavenly spheres forever in motion. The chapter examines the Pomponazzi reflections on the intellective abstraction - in addition to the fluctuations and uncertainties, which can be interpreted by the epistemological model of identity as a consequence of lack of exemption. Pomponazzi emphasizes the passivity of the human intellect. The representationalism is identified as the consequence of Pomponazzi model change in epistemology and as complementary consequence of empiricism. The original text of the chapter is in German.
