Chapter Summary

The objective of this paper is to approach Anna Seghers’ and Bodo Uhse’s Mexican exile narrative taking into account the question of gender and the aspects of masculinity and femininity in their Mexican characters. We will focus on Anna Seghers’ works “Crisanta” and “Das wirkliche Blau”, as well as Bodo Uhse’s short stories “Reise in einem blauen Schwan” and “Gespräch beim Regen”. It will be pointed out how both authors depict their Mexican feminine and masculine characters and which gender differences underlie their characterisations.
