Chapter Summary

This paper deals with the concept of heroism in Lisa Fittko’s memoirs. Analysing the narrator’s individual and social identity in her autobiographical works, it is possible to observe that heroism was not an individual but a collective feature. The solidarity of exiles and political activists allowed them to stand up against fascism. Fittko shows that it is not individual courage but collective humanity that is important for the exiles.
