With the development of cyberspaces and the Internet, notions of space and place have been intensely complicated. Cyberspace invades and transforms the physical space of our embodied location in innumerable ways and provides immersive environments in which one can lose oneself completely. The dwindling of the distance between the spectator and visual representation seems to endanger the critical potential of aesthetic reflection. Starting from Lyotard’s notion of the tautegorical, this paper theorizes some aesthetic and political aspects of the passages and boundaries between real and virtual spaces by discussing art works that exemplify forms of critical distancing “from within.”
