Remembering (almost not meeting) Beckett … sitting in a café atop a department store in 1976 with a friend having tea, figuring he’s gonna come out of rehearsals for Footfalls at the Royal Court around lunch time to go eat next door, hopefully, and back thereafter, let’s ambush him at 2 o’clock. Went over from rooftop place across Sloane Square just as he was opening the weighty door elegantly for Billie (Whitelaw).
