Chapter Summary

In general most "history of Chinese thought" or "history of Chinese philosophy" works in circulation present a series of great thinkers, from Confucius to Kang Youwei, and the classics, from the Book of Songs to The Book of Great Unity. Traditional intellectual history generally relies on various history books and other works that have been handed down from ancient times. In intellectual history, the gradual accumulation of knowledge can give rise to changes in thought, and changes in thought can then give rise to changes in knowledge. The traditional way of writing intellectual history is heavily influenced by the concept that "intellectual history is the intellectual history of thinkers", and that way of thinking is itself the product of a certain value orientation. Chinese scholars have been pondering since the 1990s how to change the original intellectual history model so as to bring these new discoveries into the field.
