Chapter Summary

A large stele of white marble comprising two joining fragments. Fragment b was found in 1927 in a Byzantine wall in a north-south road between the north stoa of the Heraion and the main temple. Fragment a was found in 1952 or 1953 in debris in the same area. As Habicht noted, leasing out sacred property was a common practice in Greece. Even though the archaeological evidence allows reconstructing the development of the Heraion with some degree of accuracy, knowledge of Samian cult practice remains meager due to lack of adequate evidence. A coherent exposition on the local religion, possible to a certain extent for islands such as Cos or Rhodes, is thus impossible for Samos.
