Chapter Summary

This chapter deals with the alliance between Japan and the United States (U.S.). The Prime Minister of Japan and the President of the U.S. agree that the three legs of the Japan-U.S. relationshipsecurity, political, and economicare based on shared values and interests and rest on the mutual confidence embodied in the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security. The Prime Minister and the President reaffirm their strong determination, on the eve of the 21st century, to build on the successful history of security cooperation and to work hand-in-hand to secure peace and prosperity for future generations. The strong Alliance between Japan and the U.S. helped to ensure peace and security in the Asia- Pacific region during the Cold War. The Alliance continues to underlie the dynamic economic growth in this region.
