The possible role of ABA in induction and maintenance of dormancy, and in seed maturation and germination is discussed. The physiological activities of ABA metabolites are also assessed. It is not clear at present whether ABA plays a role in the induction of dormancy. Reduction in ABA content is not sufficient to break dormancy and it has not yet been demonstrated that a reduction is even necessary. There is considerable evidence that ABA levels rise and then fall during maturation of non-dormant seeds. It has been suggested that ABA prevents precocious germination, but more evidence is necessary to support this hypothesis and to determine the mechanism by which ABA might effect this. Although most of the known ABA metabolites have reduced ABA physiological activities, phaseic acid has been found active in several bioassays.
