The rise and fall of different populations of mRNA during the embryogenesis of cotton cotyledons have been followed by cataloging (a) the extant protein population, (b) the in vivo synthesis of proteins and (c) the in vitro synthesis of proteins from extracted mRNA, all at intervals during embryogenesis. Evidence is presented for the existence of three mRNA subsets, all under different regulatory regimes, one of which may be induced by the regulator abscisic acid (ABA).
