The effect of sugars, proteins, amino acids and phenols on pollen germination and tube growth of Cyamopsis tetragonoloba Taub, was studied in vitro. Of the four sugars tested, sucrose (25%) produced the longest pollen tube, while glucose (30%) produced the highest percentage of germination in the presence of Ca2+ and B3+. Fructose did not have any significant effect, whereas maltose, though not a component of the exudate, promoted both pollen germination and tube growth when added together with Ca2+ and B3+. Proline, glutamic acid and chlorogenic acid promoted both pollen germination and tube growth, whereas addition of hydroxy proline, glycine and bovine serum albumin enhanced only pollen tube length. Aspartic acid increased germination but inhibited pollen tube growth. The effect of a few inorganic ions and the cumulative effect of the above-mentioned chemicals at optimal concentrations were also studied and their role in pollen germination is discussed.
