Dormant apple embryos are very sensitive to oxygen. They germinate better in hypoxia than in air or in atmospheres enriched with oxygen. Breaking of dormancy by cold treatment amounts to reducing the noxious effect of high oxygen concentrations. This sensitivity to oxygen is a property of the embryo axis. An excess of oxygen affects germination sensu stricto, but has very little effect on root and hypocotyl growth.
