The fruit of Phellodendron amurense bears glandular cell complexes which produce a volatile oil consisting mainly of myrcen (about 90%), an acyclic monoterpene hydrocarbon. Only 4–10% of the oil, depending on the stage of development, is in the form of oxygenated compounds among which the occurrence of some methylketones is worth mentioning. The essential oil composition changes only slightly during the development of the fruits. In the younger glandular cells which contain numerous plastids, osmiophilic material inside the plastid tubuli can be observed. At a later stage they become nearly empty. Electron micrography shows that the plastids take part in the formation of these osmiophilic compounds, which are most probably essential oils. However, that the cytoplasm is also partly involved in this process cannot be excluded.
