By means of columnar and thin-layer chromatography, the presence of carotenoids in seven species of lichens from Israel was studied. The investigations revealed the presence of the following carotenoids: rubixanthin, α-β-cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, canthaxanthin, adonixanthin, astaxanthin, lutein epoxide, antheraxanthin and mutatoxanthin. The total carotenoid content of the material ranged from 3.2 to 11.7 mg.g−2 dry weight.
