An increase to 10 mM of the Ca2+ concentration in the growth medium of excised pea roots abolished the morphological changes caused by the presence of 120 mM NaCl and allowed an almost normal root elongation. The K+/Na+ ratio in the terminal segment of salt-mated roots was about 1/5 of that in controls. Addition of 10 mM Ca2+ resulted in a twofold increase of the K+/Na+ ratio in the terminal segment, but hardly altered this ratio in the other root segments. The importance of the meristematic region in the salt response of roots is emphasized.
