Calcium applied to cut rose flowers mainly as Ca(NO3)2 (but also as CaCl2) extended longevity and promoted bud opening. The effect was recorded when calcium was applied either alone or together with 2% sucrose (S) and 8-hydroxyquinoline citrate (HQC). Treatments were applied either continuously or as a short-term (20-h) pulse. Longevity extension was observed in the rose cultivars Sonia, Celica, Samantha, and Mercedes. In Ilseta roses, calcium did not extend longevity over that achieved in an HQC + S preservative solution. Mg and K salts had no beneficial effect on the keeping qualities of cut roses. Measurements of 45Ca distribution showed that calcium accumulated in all flower parts, including petals.
