Britain and Canada are compared in terms of immigration trends and their experience of race relations in the last decade. The demographic and socio-economic characteristics of visible minorities are examined. Special attention is given to the underlying conditions, intervening factors and precipitating causes of ethnic conflict and violence. Contrary to the view that strict immigration controls are necessary to maintain social harmony, it is argued that a more liberal immigration policy, accompanied by policies designed to maintain full employment and promote equality of opportunity, would facilitate the integration of existing minorities.
