Seaweed concentrate prepared from Ecklonia maxima (Osbeck) significantly suppressed the reproduction of Pratylenchus zeae on excised maize roots by 47-63 %, compared with the untreated control, during an in vitro experiment. In a greenhouse experiment, reproduction of P. zeae on maize was not affected by any of the seaweed concentrations. Plant growth of the maize plants was not stimulated by the seaweed concentrate in the in vitro or in the greenhouse experiment. In the greenhouse experiment, plants were weakened by the toxic effects of the highest seaweed concentrate and became more intolerant to nematode attack.
