Root exudates and extracts from in vitro grown seedlings of sesame showed an inhibitory effect on egg hatch and juvenile penetration by root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita. Analysis of root exudates of sesame showed seven free amino acids, i.e. aspartic acid, glutamic acid, valine, proline, serine, glycine and leucine, whereas the exudates of okra had ten free amino acids, viz., glycine, serine, leucine, isoleucine, alanine, arginine, glutamic acid, glutamine, lysine and cystine. Three sugars viz. fructose, glucose and sucrose were found in sesame root exudates and extracts. Commercial amino acids both singly, and in combination inhibited egg hatching. The significance of this work in the development of nematicides is discussed.
