The reproduction of Globodera pallida, pathotype Pa 3, on cv. Cardinal (resistant against G. rostochiensis, pathotype Ro 1) was affected less in the presence of pathotype Ro 1 in a mixed population (ratio pathotype Pa 3 to pathotype Ro 1 one to ten) than by intraspecific competition in a pure Pa 3 population of the same density as the total density of the mixed population. Reproduction rates on cvs. Irene and Cardinal of the offspring of a pure population of pathotype Pa 3 and of that of the mixed population, both from cv. Cardinal, were the same on the same cultivar and at the same population densities. The proportion of the females of pathotype Pa 3 in the original mixed population fertilized by males of pathotype Ro 1 must, therefore, have been negligible.
