The host status of Chloris gayana (Rhodes grass) and other grasses was compared in controlled inoculation tests. Reproduction of Meloidogyne javanica was assessed by egg-mass and egg counts on one tetraploid and two diploid Rhodes grasses. Egg-mass production was compared with that on other grasses and on tomatoes. Eragrostis curvula cv. Ermelo and Panicum maximum cv. Petri were more resistant than Rhodes grass cv. Katambora. The tetraploid Rhodes grass strain Mt. Makulu 56 was generally more susceptible than diploid cultivar Katambora. The scope for improvement of resistance within an agronomically superior tetraploid strain appears good. The objective is the production of a Rhodes grass cv. yielding more herbage and with incorporated nematode resistance for rotation in tobacco culture, and other susceptible arable crops.
