On January 1st, 1969, the membership of the Society was 783 (January 1st, 1968: 788). In 1968, the death occurred of L. M. van Nieuwenhoven (member of the Society since 1938), our oldest member L. F. de Beaufort (1904), Miss K. Schijfsma (1918), and E. J. Slijper (1929). The past year shows a continuation of the Society's regular activities. These are becoming increasingly diverse, now that several sections exist within the Society, viz., the Section for Ecology, the Section for Systematics and Biogeography, and the Section for Comparative Physiology. In 1968, the journal's name was changed from "Archives Néerlandaises de Zoologie" to "Netherlands Journal of Zoology", and the appearance of the journal was modernized. On July 16th, 1968, Dr. C. Groot tendered his resignation from the directorate of the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, which left Prof. Dr. H. Postma the sole director of the Institute. A new design is being prepared, and Ir. C. A. Doets will supervise the new activities.
