On January 1st, 1973, the membership of the Society was 822 (1972: 787). In 1972 the death occurred of our members C. J. van der Klaauw, A. J. van Pesch, W. C. van Heurn and J. D. F. Hardenberg. The scientific activities of the Society are listed below. No summaries, however, are given of the papers read at the Symposium "Man, Animal and Society"; these papers will be published in bookform by the Centrum voor Landbouwpublicaties en Landbouwdocumentatie (PUDOC) at Wageningen. This symposium was organized in collaboration with the Biological Council of the Netherlands Academy of Sciences on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Society. This jubilee was celebrated by festivities and by the publication of a chronology of the Society, written by P. Smit (Nijmegen), "De Nederlandse Dierkundige Vereniging en zijn Station 1872-1972". In May the new vessel for sea research, Aurelia, as well as two new buildings of the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research at Texel have been opened by the Minister of Science and Scientific Education, Mr. M. L. de Brauw.
