1. With respect to photoklinokinesis the concept non-directional light gradient is a fallacy because of fundamental properties of light (see 1). 2. Therefore a radial light gradient was produced in time, as determined by the changing location of the experimental animal, whereas spatially the light field was all the time isotrope (see 2.2). 3. At a constant level of illumination the net rate of radial displacement per unit of time was found to be independent of that level between about 1 and 70 lux (see 3.1). 4. The net rate of radial displacement per unit of time was smaller "up the gradient" and larger "down the gradient" as compared with no gradient (see 3.2) ; this might be indicative of photoklinokinesis; however negative photo-orthokinesis might also produce this result. 5. More animals returned when moving "up the gradient" than when moving "down the gradient". Although this might indicate a klinokinetic mechanism, there are arguments that photoklinotaxis might at least also play a role.
