Oviposition choice and food preference experiments were carried out to compare a population of Yponomeuta padellus from Sorbus aucuparia in Finland with various populations from Crataegus monogyna and Prunus spinosa in the Netherlands and W. Germany, respectively. The results show a strong predilection of ovipositing females for their own host plant(s), and a higher survival rate and/or pupal weight were obtained when feeding the larvae on their own food plant. Consequently, the two can be considered as host races. Speculations are made on their origin and mode of speciation.
