Au cours de la culture de l'igname à la Martinique, Scutellonema bradys se développe successivement dans le semenceau, puis dans les racines, qui constituent le foyer intermédiaire, enfin dans le tubercule néo-formé, puis le tubercule. C'est dans le tubercule, après la récolte, que la multiplication du nématode est la plus intense. Ce sont les femelles adultes qui véhiculent l'infestation du semenceau aux nouveaux organes. Dans le tubercule, il semble que le déclenchement du processus de pullulation, qui correspond à l'apparition des zones de nécrose, coïncide avec son entrée en dormance, donc avec l'arrêt du processus respiratoire.
