In jüngster Zeit ist das Buch Leviticus in den Blickpunkt des exegetischen Interesses gerückt. Vielfach wird es innerhalb des Pentateuch als dessen Mitte betrachtet. Dabei richtet sich das besondere Interesse auf das Kapitel 16, das in formaler und inhaltlicher Hinsicht eine Sonderstellung einnimmt. Die Opfergesetzgebung kommt erst mit der jährlichen Sühnehandlung am jom hakkippurim zu ihrem entscheidenden Abschluß. Aber auch von den "Unreinheiten" oder "Verunreinigungen," von denen in Kapp. 11–15 vielfältig die Rede ist, werden die Israeliten durch die Riten dieses Tages gereinigt. So kann man Leviticus 16 geradezu als "Mitte der Tora" bezeichnen.
