Mentioned on a parchment double-leaf kept in Vienna (P.Vindob.G 39756) presenting a fragmentary codex of the so-called Apocalypse of Peter, 'Aχερoυσια λιμνη and 'Hλυσιoν πεδιoν may surprise the reader. How to explain that such classical terms were used in a Christian text? By establishing a general basis of data for the usage and meaning of both elements in (late) antiquity, the aim of this paper is to shed light on the underlying motives and ideas behind the adoption of the Acherousian lake and the Elysion by early Christian authors and scribes, a fact which has rarely received full attention.
