Die zeitgeschichtliche Einbettung der Prophetie Habakkuks gegen Ende des 7. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. scheint zu einer communis opinio geworden zu sein, weniger das literarkritische Urteil über die drei Kapitel. Jedoch widerrät der ideelle Gesamtduktus des kleinen Schriftwerkes einer Aufgliederung in differente literarische Schichten. Die unverkennbar hervortretende Glaubenshaltung des Autors und der Versuch, sein und seiner Mitlebenden Schicksal von daher zu bewältigen, verweist überdies das Buch Habakkuk in ein fortgeschrittenes Stadium frühjüdischer Geschichte.
