This paper shows that the use of the Hebrew word ‘lp as a troop gives the army size consistent with the Israelite population calculated for the average family, each having three males. The mathematical approach of C. J. Humphreys encounters problems because his assumption about the first-born gives the average Israelite family having 8.7 sons. A possible solution to the census of the 30-50 year old Levites is presented.
