Two types of stabilizing selection are demonstrated in Eumeces obsoletus: 1. An elimination of extreme phenotypes during postnatal development (normalizing or centripetal selection) 2. A shift toward smaller, hence more numerous scales occur during the same phase, implying that the genotype, the group of alleles controlling larger relative scale size are selected for during other phases of the life cycle (endocyclic selection). An analysis of asymmetry of four characters (supraoculars, superciliaries, upper labials and lower labials) revealed that, except for upper labials in males, there is no departure from a central tendency.
