An examination of the original type specimens and descriptions of Emys nigricans Gray, Emys muticus Cantor, and Geoclemys kwangtungensis Pope, in the context of the subsequent literature and available specimens, reveals that G. kwangtungensis Pope is a synonym of E. nigricans Gray, but that E. muticus Cantor (actually a species complex) is distinctly different. The proper taxonomic allocation of the Chinese dumb-head turtle is Chinemys nigricans (Gray) and that of the Asian yellow pond turtle is Mauremys mutica (Cantor).
