The ability of green frogs (Rana esculenta) to find water in the laboratory was studied in complete darkness and in daylight. Plastic boxes with small holes in their lids were used as traps. Frogs preferred a water-containing dish to a dry dish when the humidity of the air was low (47-51%) They did not use visual cues in the localization of the water-containing dish. When the humidity of the air was higher (65-68%) preference for water could not be observed. Bilateral transection of the olfactory nerves abolished hygrotactic orientation.
