II Putenkücken wurden durch Entfernung der Columella oder des Ductus cochlearis in ihrem Hörvermögen beeinträchtigt oder ganz taub gemacht. Die gehörlosen Kücken folgten dichter als normale Vergleichstiere. Die gehörlosen Hennen brüteten normal, verhielten sich aber am Nest so, als ob sie nicht zwischen Kücken und Bodenfeind unterscheiden könnten. Dies führte dazu, dass sie sogar selbst erbrütete Kücken unmittelbar nach dem Schlüpfen tothackten.
