1. The normal feeding behavior of the Three-spined stickleback is described in terms of measures that consistently show the effects of deprivation and satiation. 2. With increased time in the feeding session, these measures show the reverse of the changes brought about by deprivation. 3. The decrease in the frequency of completed feeding responses is examined more closely by using short units of time in the session. Within the general trend to decrease, a major fluctuation appears: feeding responses decrease very rapidly early in the session, then increase again before decreasing continually to the end of the feeding session. The characteristics of this fluctuation depend on the initial feeding rate. 4. The various changes that appear in the course of a feeding session and with increasing deprivation are related in a model. The model shows the motivational background of the change from high to low hunger. 5. Some of the conditions that determine other hehavior which regularly appears in the feeding session are described. The interaction of feeding behavior with other behavior that appears in the session is examined.
