Reproductive aspects of Atya margaritacea from the Coyuca River, Mexico, were studied from February 1991 to January 1992. A preponderance of males over females (1.2:1) was observed during the sampling programme. Based on the presence of ovigerous females throughout the year, reproduction is considered to be continuous, but the maximum reproductive period occurs during the rainy season (June to October). Minimal size for sexual maturity of the population in the system was recorded at 32 mm total length; a relationship between the size of females (x) and the number of eggs (y) produced was observed; this relation is defined by the equation: ln y = 3.4138 ln x - 4.4132.
