A synthesis of previous works (1923-1968) and personal observations (carried out in 1982) enabled us to determine the nature of and the typical populations on the trawlable bottoms of various Algerian sectors of the Mediterranean. For each area, the number of individuals of Parapenaeus longirostris caught per hour, is reported. Analysis of the various sectors (with 73 stations) shows that this species is present on all kinds of substratum, but principally on those with Funiculina quadrangularis and with Octocorallia. Considering the frequency (on a total of 91 stations) and the abundance (on a total of 5805 individuals) of the species, P.longirostris does not require any particular substratum, but it apparently prefers muddy, more or less sandy bottoms.
