A rare commensal crab, Pinnixa penultipedalis Stimpson, 1858, was collected from the Oki Islands, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. The present specimen is not only the third record of this rare species from Japanese waters but also represents an extension of its known range further northeast. We also examined the type specimen of another rare congener, Pinnixa haematosticta Sakai, 1934, and an updated key to the genus Pinnixa in Japan is given.
