A new amphipod Nuuanu hanamurai sp. nov. is described from brackish waters in the Malaysian sector of the Strait of Malacca, as the first record of the genus from Malaysia. Nuuanu hanamurai, the twelfth member of the genus, is morphologically similar to N. kata Lowry & Watson, 2002 and N. merringannee (Barnard, 1974) in having a small dorsodistal tooth on pleonites 1-2 and a simple (not geniculate) peduncular article 1 of antenna 1. However, N. hanamurai differs from N. kata in the presence of eyes, 11 serrate robust setae on the outer plate of maxilla 1, and a dorsodistal tooth on pereonite 7. Nuuanu hanamurai differs from N. merringannee in having a long dactylus on the male gnathopod 2, a straight lower margin on coxa 4, a slender dactylus of pereopods 5-7, a long outer ramus of uropod 3, and a telson without robust setae.
