Ein neuer Vertreter der Cephalocarida aus der Bucht von San Francisco, Californien, wird beschrieben. Auf Grund von Unterschieden in der Zahl der Körperanhänge, in der Struktur der Segmente, der Gesamtzahl von Segmenten in Jungstadien und der Zahl der Gelenke der Endopoditen wird die Errichtung der neuen Familie Lightiellidae vorgeschlagen. Die Familie enthält ein einziges Genus, Lightiella, dessen Speziestyp L. serendipita sp. nov. ist. Vergleiche mit der einzigen anderen beschrieben Cephalocaride, Hutchinsoniella macracantha Sanders (Hutchinsoniellidae), werden angestellt.
