In dem Gebiet des Kurilo-Kamtschatka Tiefseegrabens wurden in einer Tiefe von 1050 bis 1070 m zwei Exemplare von Bodenostracoden entdeckt. Das eine war ein geschlechtsreifes Weibchen der neuen Art Azygocypridina birsteini n. sp., das andere ein nicht geschlechtsreifes Männchen, dessen genaue Bestimmung zurzeit unmöglich erscheint. A. birsteini n. sp. unterscheidet sich von anderen Arten durch den Bau der dritten Thoraxbeine. Nach neuen Angaben ist die Gattung Azygocypridina geographisch ausserordentlich verbreitet, und sind alle Arten dieser Gattung, mit Ausnahme von A. africanus, Vertreter der Tiefseefauna.
