[Records are given on the distribution of Elminius modestus Darwin on the German coast. The species was found first in the Elbe estuary near Cuxhaven in 1953. In the same year a small territory on the coast of Ostfriesland near Nessmersiel was also settled. In 1954 the spread of Elminim increased on a large scale on the coast of Ostfriesland; at Borkum and in the Jade-Busen it appeared later. From Cuxhaven Elminius spread very rapidly in 1954, the Wadden Sea near Neuwerk was settled then. The Elbe estuary is inhabited by Elminius up to Altenbruch near Cuxhaven. At Heligoland the species was found in 1955 on the Düne and at the eastern side, not, however, in the southern harbour and at the west side (Den Hartog, 1959). It reached Heligoland by artificial transport. In 1960 settlements of the species occurred in the southern harbour and in the western parts of the island. On the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein Elminius was found in 1954 around Büsum and at List-Sylt in 1955. In 1960 it was common there in many places from Friedrichskoog to. Dagebüll, but was absent from several other localities. In some places Elminius is in competition with Balanus balanoides, B. improvisus, and B. crenatus, but these species have not been ousted by Elminius yet. In the tidal zone Elminius seems to be more sensitive to low winter temperatures than the other, indigenous, barnacles; this is true especially for the Elbe estuary. If the air temperature is not too low, like at Heligoland or Borkum, the Elminius population will survive in the tidal zone during winter. In many places on the German coast the season of settling of Elminius lasts from May-June to October-November., Records are given on the distribution of Elminius modestus Darwin on the German coast.
